Women’s Volleyball Remains Perfect After Weekend Tournament

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College women's volleyball team moves to 8-0 overall, after traveling to Perrysburg, OH for the Owens Community College tournament this past weekend.

 

In their opening match, Richard Bland took down Terra State 3-1, with match scores of 25-17, 25-18, 20-25, and 25-13. Gabby Figueroa led the attack with 15 kills. Leilani Goggin added 11 and Hailey Hopkins chipped in with 10 and two blocks for the Statesmen. Karagyn Durco added 44 assists in four sets played and had eight digs. Sarah Heath and Silaulauinasimativa Aeolua pitched in with three service aces each. Rylie Harris and Sophia Kaiser were credited with 18 and 11 digs in the win.

 

In their second match on Friday, September 2nd, the Statesmen bested Vincennes University 3-1, with match scores of 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-20. Hailey Hopkins led with 17 kills and one block for the Statesmen. Sarah Heath added 11 kills and 13 digs in the victory. Gabby Figueroa, Silaulauinasimativa Aeolua, and Sophia Kaiser had seven kills each. Karagyn Durco assisted on 42 different occasions and was credited with six digs. Ryle Harris had 19 digs in the four set win.

 

Saturday afternoon, Richard Bland opened against nationally ranked #8 McHenry County College. The Statesmen took a 3-2 win over the Lions with set scores of 19-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 15-13. Hailey Hopkins and Silaulauinasimativa Aeolua led the attack with 13 and 10 kills. Durco pitched in with 34 assists through five sets. Rylie Harris had 20 digs, Aeolua had 15 and Sophia Kaiser chipped in with 12. Hopkins was credited with two blocks.

 

The second match of the day consisted of a rematch from last year's NJCAA National Tournament, as the Statesmen took on the defending national champions and current nationally ranked #3, Parkland College. Richard Bland earned redemption by taking down the Cobras in three sets; 25-22, 25-23, and 25-23. Aeolua and Goggin led the attack with 11 and 10 kills, while Durco assisted on 36 occassions. Harris had 20 digs and Hopkins added two blocks in the victory.

 

In their final match of the tournament, Richard Bland showed no sign of exhaustion and completed the tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Edison Community College. Sophia Kasier and Leilani Goggin had 10 and nine kills to lead the Statesmen to victory. Karagyn Durco chipped in with 35 assists and Rylie Harris had 22 digs. Hailey Hopkins and Joselyn Jones helped on defense with three and two blocks for Richard Bland.

 

The Richard Bland women's volleyball team next hosts Pitt Community College on Wednesday, September 7th at 6pm.
