Statesmen Upset #1 Seed, Headed to Final Four
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team moves to 28-2 overall after upsetting the #1, undefeated seed, Morton College in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament, held in Port Huron, Michigan.
The Statesmen pulled out to an early 20-12 lead through the first 10 minutes of play, and controlled the pace for a majority of the game. Richard Bland held a 35-23 lead into the break. The Panthers outscored the Statesmen by four in the third and two in the fourth, but Janiah Jones would seal the 69-63 victory at the free throw line for the Statesmen, in the final seconds of the contest.
Three Statesmen scored double-digit figures in the win led by a double-double from Auzhane Allard with 21 points and 13 boards. Allard also added four assists. Janiah Jones chipped in with 18 points, two rebounds, and one assist. Jasmine Norman had 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Courtney Scott and Lauryn Bell had seven points each. Scott also had eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Bell added six rebounds and two assists. Amira Roy added four points, and Chamara Martin two in the win.
Richard Bland went 73.1% from the charity stripe, 38.6% from the field, and 28.6% from the perimeter.
The Richard Bland College women's basketball team next prepares for the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament Semifinals, which take place tomorrow evening at 8pm. The Statesmen will take on #5 Harcum College in the Final Four.
