Women’s Basketball Defeats Cape Fear in Semifinals, Clinches Nationals Bid
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team moves to 25-2 overall after traveling to Wake Technical Community College for the Region 10 South Atlantic District Tournament Semifinals this evening.
With a 83-68 win over Cape Fear Community College in the semifinals, Richard Bland advances to the championship game which will take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 11th at 2pm. No matter the outcome tomorrow, both the winner and runner up have clinched their bids to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. With a win, the Statesmen will be named the South Atlantic District A Champions. In the event of a loss, the Statesmen will be named the South Atlantic District B Champions. In the inaugural season, the Richard Bland College women's basketball team has punched their ticket to nationals for the first time in program history!
The Statesmen and Sea Devils battled to a 17-all first period. Richard Bland came out on top by one in the second period and would not look back, outscoring Cape Fear 29-14 in the third. Although the Sea Devils outscored the Statesmen by one in the fourth, the Statesmen cruised to a 83-68 victory after six lead changes throughout regulation.
Four Statesmen scored double-digit figures in the win led by Amira Roy with her second double-double of the tournament with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jasmine Norman chipped in with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Auzhane Allard tallied her 16th double-double of the season with 18 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Courtney Scott added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Off the bench, Lauryn Bell was credited with six points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Janiah Jones had five points and Kennedee Matthews two in the win.
Richard Bland went 52.9% from the charity stripe, 42.0% from the field, and 30.0% from the perimeter.
The Richard Bland College women's basketball team next prepares for the Region 10 South Atlantic District Tournament Championship contest where they will take on Catawba Valley Community College tomorrow, Saturday, March 11th at 2pm.
