Bulldogs Down Statesmen in Softball

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Softball team traveled to Pitt Community College Wednesday afternoon for a conference doubleheader with the Bulldogs. After completion of the doubleheader, the Statesmen moved to 16-16 overall, and 8-8 in conference play after falling to the Bulldogs 2-6 and 3-4.

 

In game one, Richard Bland fell 2-6 to Pitt despite out-hitting them nine to seven. Brayanna Holland, Arianna Manson, Claudia Minetree, and Taylor Green each collected two hits for Richard Bland. Pitt Community College opened the scoring in the first after a double scored two runs. Richard Bland tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to a single by Holland, and a steal of home by Shekinah Soto. The Bulldogs captured the lead, 2-6 in the bottom of the sixth when a double scored two runs, and two singles scored one run each. Holland led Richard Bland with one run batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 in the game. Grace Urban took the loss for the Statesmen. The righty went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking six.

 

In game two, Richard Bland stayed in it until the end, but Pitt pulled away late in a 3-4 nightcap victory. The game was tied at three in the bottom of the fifth when a ground out, scored one run. Richard Bland was the first to get on the board in the first inning when a wild pitch scored one run. The Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the first on a double which scored two runs. McKynzi Dawson walked, which helped Richard Bland tie the game at two in the top of the second. A sacrifice bunt by Ava Balli gave the Statesmen the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third. The Bulldogs tied the game at three on a groundout in the bottom of the fourth. Samantha Barbe went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Statesmen in hits. Balli took the loss for Richard Bland. The hurler went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking none.

 

The Richard Bland College Softball team next hosts Fayetteville Technical Community College on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th. Games one and two will take place in a 3pm doubleheader on Saturday, with Sophomore Day celebrations in between games, while game three will take place at 12pm on Sunday.
