SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College men's soccer team hosted their home opener Sunday afternoon and faced off against the Fire Ants of USC Sumter. In the back and forth battle, Richard Bland defeated the Fire Ants 1-0, moving the Statesmen to 3-0-2 overall and in conference play.
It was a scoreless first half Sunday afternoon, in the Region 10 clash. Neither the Statesmen or Fire Ants could connect and find the back of the net through 73 minutes of play. In the 74th minute, Juan Santana found Alonso Villegas on a short pass from the corner, in their attacking third. With a one-touch shot, Villegas put on past the keeper, hitting the bottom left corner giving the Statesmen the 1-0 lead, which would end up being the game-winner. The Fire Ants were unable to counter, as the Statesmen held on for the win.
Nate Newberry started between the pipes for Richard Bland. He came up with five big saves for the Statesmen in 90 minutes of play.
The Richard Bland College men's soccer team next hosts Southwest Virginia Community College, for their second meeting of the season, on Wednesday, September 18th at 2pm.
