SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College men's soccer team opened the season on the road Tuesday afternoon as they faced the Flying Eagles of Southwest Virginia Community College. In the game, the Statesmen earned a 3-3 tie, moving to 0-0-1 in conference play and overall.
The Flying Eagles took the 0-1 lead with three minutes remaining in the first half. They went on to tally once more in the 54th minute to lead 0-2. The Statesmen cut the deficit to one in the 57th minute when Nate Newberry teamed up with Sebastian Rodriguez for a Rodriguez goal. 11 minutes later, Daniel Nunfio found Diego Zogbi to tie the game, 2-2. Richard Bland struck once more in the 84th minute when Nunfio tallied one of his own off a ball from Victor Manuel, to put the Statesmen ahead 3-2. In the 85th minute, the Flying Eagles tied the game at three, and the score remained 3-3 through the final whistle.
Thomas Seymour started the game between the pipes for Richard Bland. He made eight saves in all 90 minutes of play. Richard Bland had 17 total shots on the day.
The Richard Bland College men's soccer team next faces Denmark Technical College on Saturday, August 31st in the team's home opener. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
