Men’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team traveled to Gaston College Saturday afternoon for their second meeting of the season with the Rhinos. After completion of the game, the Statesmen moved to 6-14 overall, 4-6 in conference play after dropping the conference game, 75-84 in double overtime.

 

Saturday afternoon was a dog fight with the Statesmen and Rhinos pushing the tempo, in a thrilling conference game. Richard Bland trailed by two heading into the break, 25-27, but made up for the deficit by outscoring the Rhinos 33-1 in the second half to force overtime. Both teams added 10 more points in the first overtime period. Doyle Brown kept the Statesmen alive, hitting one from the perimeter at the buzzer of the first overtime period, forcing double overtime. In the final five minutes, the Rhinos continued their momentum scoring 16 points, over the Statesmen seven, to hang on for the 75-84 conference victory.

 

Four Statesmen tallied double figures in the conference loss, led by Andy Ramirez exploding for 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Doyle Brown added 16 points, and Jalen Smith 13 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and four steals in the game. Off the bench, Emmanuel Vonhm chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. Jermaine Coston Jr. had seven rebounds and five points, Dove Fishburne five points, and Christian Chambers two points in the double overtime loss.

 

Richard Bland shot 44.2% from the field, 28.6% from the perimeter, and 71.4% from the charity stripe.

 

The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team next travels to Denmark Technical College on Friday, February 28th for a 7:30pm conference game, and to USC Salkehatchie on Saturday, March 1st for a 3pm conference game.
