Statesmen Late-Game Rally Falls Short in Region 10 Men’s Basketball Match-Up

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team hosted Brunswick Community College Sunday afternoon for a conference contest with the Dolphins. After the contest, the Statesmen moved to 4-9 overall, 2-1 in conference play after dropping the narrow contest, 69-72.

 

Sunday afternoon, Jalen Smith put the Statesmen on the board first with a put back layup, to go ahead 2-0. The Dolphins answered with a bucket from the perimeter to go ahead 2-3. Richard Bland held down their home court, but trailed by nine, 36-45 at the break. Richard Bland regained the lead with 9:30 remaining in the game, 54-54, but the Dolphins continued to high pressure the Statesmen. Richard Bland outscored the Dolphins 33-27 in the second half, but it was not enough, as the Dolphins earned the 69-72, conference victory in Statesman Hall.

 

Andy Ramirez led the way for Richard Bland with 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Doyle Brown finished with 16 points, two steals, one rebound, one assist, and one block. Jalen Smith tallied his fifth double-double of the season scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Off the bench, Emmanuel Vonhm added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Dove Fishburne had nine assists and four points, Jermaine Coston Jr. had three rebounds and two points, and Christian Chambers had two rebounds.

Richard Bland shot 39.3% from the field, 25.0% from the perimeter, and 73.9% from the charity stripe.

 

The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team next hosts Sandhills Community College on Wednesday, January 22nd at 6pm.
