STATESMEN HOST CAPE FEAR FOR MILITARY APPRECIATION

PETERSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked Richard Bland College men's basketball team looks to chart its fourteenth-consecutive win for the best start in program history when it plays host to the Sea Devils of Cape Fear on Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Statesman Hall. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the teams this year and RBC's Military Appreciation game. 

The match-up will also be the Statesmen debut on the new hardwood floors that were put in over the holiday break. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Radio Network with Steve "Da Truth" Nugent. Fans can also watch live stats on RBCathletics.com.

The Statesmen (13-0, 6-0 Region X) began play after defeating Snead State, 80-54 in its first game of the new year in Hanceville, Ala. on Jan. 2. Three players scored in double figures led by sophomore Tavon Mealy (Richmond, VA) with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Both sophomore center Melvin Gregory (Weems, VA) and freshman guard Reginald Moses (Henrico, VA) charted 14 points each.

On Jan. 3, RBC went into overtime to defeat Wallace State, 77-70. Moses led the Statesmen in scoring with 19 points following Mealy and sophomore Avery Ugba (Silver Springs, MD) with 17 points each.

Overall this season, Mealy leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 21.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Led by head coach Ryan Mantlo, Cape Fear is 10-5 overall after defeating Wallace State in a 73-63 decision. The Sea Devils is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region X Division 1 conference and is the defending Region X Division 1 men's basketball district champions.

Sophomore Anthony Vanhook is the team's leading scorer and rebounder with 23.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Demetres Abrams is the second on the team with 12.8 ppg, while sophomore Nate Sims averages 6.4 ppg.

Last season, the Statesmen defeated the Sea Devils, 90-81 on Nov. 8.
