Fletcher enters his 3rd season as head coach for the 2023-24 year.

 

John Fletcher, who has led his scholastic baseball teams to playoff appearances in 17 of 19 years as a head coach, including leading Mills E. Godwin High School to a pair of VHSL State Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2019, was named the first head coach to lead the newly announced baseball program at Richard Bland College of William and Mary. The announcement was made on Monday, January 11, 2021 by Scott Newton, Director of Athletics.

In 19 seasons as a head scholastic baseball coach at Miles Godwin (2012-20), J.R. Tucker High School (2007-11), and Manchester High School (1997-2005), Fletcher has compiled a 258-152 career record, including a 119-43 mark at Mills E. Godwin. His team was a state semi-finalist in 2016 and a finalist in 2019. On eight occasions, Fletcher's squads have competed in regional playoffs.

"Richard Bland College is excited to place the inaugural baseball program in the capable hands of John Fletcher," says Newton. "His success at the high school level serves as the foundation for building the RBC program from the ground up, which includes recruiting the type of student-athletes that will thrive academically and athletically. His experience as a coach and educator makes John a perfect fit."

Fletcher started his coaching career as a volunteer at Randolph-Macon College, his alma mater, in 1991. He landed his first head coaching position at Manchester High School in 1998 and has methodically built a stellar career that that has earned him Conference and Region Coach of the Years in five of 19 seasons, highlighted by Region 5B honors in 2019.

Nine of Fletcher's former players have played professional baseball, with seven players drafted by Major League Baseball (MLB). Twenty-three former players have played at the NCAA Division I level with 19 earning scholarships.

"I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to coach the inaugural baseball team at Richard Bland College," says Fletcher. "There is a tremendous amount of talent in Virginia. Being able to lead the RBC program in Central Virginia area will be exciting. I look forward to working with the college's student-athletes, coaches, and administrators."

A native of Leesburg, VA., Fletcher received his Bachelor of Science from Randolph-Macon College in 1991 and a Master of Education from George Washington University in 1996. He has been a Mathematics teacher in the Richmond area since 1993, the last 15 years spent in the Henrico County Public Schools system.

Fletcher and his wife Valerie have one child, daughter Alex.
