Baseball Earns Walk-Off Win Over Bobcats
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Baseball team hosted Bryant & Stratton College (VA) Wednesday afternoon for a single, conference game with the Bobcats. After completion of the game, the Statesmen moved to 18-18 overall, 9-14 in conference play after defeating the Bobcats, 13-12.
In the game, it came down to the wire, as Richard Bland grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 13-12 over Bryant & Stratton College (VA). The game was tied at 12 in the bottom of the ninth when Carson Herod singled, scoring the winning run. Richard Bland collected 13 hits in the high-scoring affair. The Bobcats were the first to get on the board in the first inning when an error scored one run. Richard Bland took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Keegan Mahoney grounded into a fielder's choice, and Connor Powell laid down a sacrifice bunt, each scoring one run. The Statesmen added one run in the third after Mahoney grounded out. The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice bunt and a single. Richard Bland flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 8-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a home run to left field by Samuel Young that drove in three. Henry Stewart homered to left field, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the Statesmen. The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the ninth thanks to a solo home run and a sacrifice bunt. Luke Sweeney earned the win for Richard Bland. The righty allowed two hits and two runs over one inning, striking out none and walking one. Mahoney started the game for the Statesmen. The pitcher gave up four hits and three runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two. Adam Tatham and Michael Wingo each appeared in relief for Richard Bland.
The Richard Bland College Baseball team next hosts Southeastern Community College-Whiteville on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th in a three-game conference series. The series was originally scheduled to be away, but has been changed to home. Game one will take place on Saturday at 4pm, with games two and three scheduled for Sunday in a 12pm doubleheader.
