FLORENCE, S.C. -- Freshman Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper hit a grand slam home run and two doubles in game one, while sophomore Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville had three hits in game two, as Richard Bland College split a Region 10 softball doubleheader at Florence-Darlington (S.C.) Technical College on Saturday in South Carolina. Sophomore Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach earned a complete game pitching victory in the 9-2 opener for the visiting Statesmen (3-6, 3-1), while Dabney took the pitching setback in the 7-4 nightcap against the host Stingers (4-2, 2-2).
In the opener, Richard Bland scored four runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of the grand slam by Bilyard (3-4, 5 RBIs). The one-out, bases-loaded blast to center field scored sophomore August Ringer/Yale (2-2), freshman Taylor Daniel/Alberta (1-4) and sophomore Katelyn King/Chesterfield (2-3). Ringer had walked, while Daniel and King each reached on singles. The Statesmen scored a run in the top of the third to lead 5-0, as a two-out RBI single by freshman Kennedy Presson/Wakefield (1-4, RBI) scored Bilyard, who had doubled. The visitors made it 9-1 in the top of the fourth, getting an RBI single from Dabney (1-3, RBI) that scored Ringer and an RBI double from Bilyard that plated King, while Dabney also scored during the at-bat. Ringer had singled, while King had walked.
Bilyard had the three extra base hits in the first game, while Ringer and King each collected two hits in the opener for Richard Bland.
Buffington (2-2) started in the circle and took the pitching win with the complete 7.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and no walks.
In the nightcap, Richard Bland yielded three runs in first and second innings before scoring two runs in the top of the third to make it 6-2. Freshman Ashley Fritz/North Chesterfield (1-3) and Ringer (1-3) each reached on singles, as Fritz crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Dabney (3-4, RBI) and Ringer scored on a sacrifice fly by Bilyard (1-2, 2 RBIs). The Statesmen closed to within 6-4 with two more runs in the top of the fifth, as Daniel (2-4) singled to open the frame and later scored with two outs via an RBI single from Bilyard, who later crossed the plate, as well.
Dabney had three hits in the second game, while Daniel collected two hits in the nightcap for Richard Bland.
Dabney (1-2) started in the circle and took the pitching triumph with the first 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Katelyn Cobb/Newsoms pitched the final 3.0 innings, yielding four hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and one walk.
Richard Bland will return to campus to play its home opener against Harford (Md.) Community College on Friday, Feb. 24, a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the softball field.
